Basking in the Son

PURPOSE:
Christians and the world think they are talking about the same things at times.  They aren’t.

LOCATION:
Beach 

PROPS:
Beach chairs (blankets, umbrella, sunscreen, sand toys optional). 
Sunglasses and Beach wear but please be discreet

CHARACTERS:
Michelle: A sun worshipper
Cindy: A Son worshipper

TIME:
4-5 minutes

PRODUCTION NOTE:
Sustaining this misunderstanding takes some subtle direction from the actresses.  Michelle’s gestures would show her love of the sun, while Cindy’s is more internal.  While “sun” and “Son” make it obvious on the page, the audience will not make the connection as quickly.

THOUGHTS:
Comparing God to the sun is not a new thing.

Regarding God’s endurance: “He will endure as long as the sun, as long as the moon, through all generations.”  Psalm 72:5

Regarding God’s eternal qualities: “May his name endure forever; may it continue as long as the sun.”  Psalm 72:17

Regarding God’s strength: “For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.”  Psalm 84:11

Regarding God’s worthiness to be praised: “Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, all you shining stars.”  Psalm 148:3

Regarding God’s power and brilliance: “In his right hand he held seven stars, and out of his mouth came a sharp double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.”  Revelation 1:16

Problems come when we try to communicate God to others.  Christians have their own words and expressions for God and the biggest barrier to effectively telling people about Christ is our words.

Ever played the game, “He’s a Christian”?  What you do is listen to interviews by celebrities, sports figures, commentators or politicians and every time they use the word “bless” or “pray” you immediately yell out “He’s a Christian!”

The premise is ludicrous, but the idea is true.  When we hear certain buzz words in Christendom, we immediately jump to the conclusion that he or she is follower of Christ.  One or two words do not a commitment make.
